Description: The Newfoundland is a large, strong, heavily coated breed. They have a small dark brown eyes and has a small triangular ears with nose that is generally black except for the bronze colored dogs that has brown nose. With feet made to be the best swimmer and tails hanging down. His coat is coarse, dense, and flat, and has an oily feel, as it is water resistant. Its coat mostly comes in black, sometimes with a little mix of white.
Temperament: This Breed has an outstanding temperament. They are good, courageous, intelligent, generous and patient dogs. They could be trusted and very loyal and protective that made them become so attached to their owner that could make them difficult to adjust to a new home. Moreover, they are also brave and like humans, they could act on his own but sometimes tends to put himself in a situation between the intruder and his family instead of barking or growling. They are a friendly dog as long as they know or sense that you don’t have any bad intentions. Because they are very sensitive they can determine some bad situations. He is even a born babysitter and is also very sociable, playful and loves children. They can get along well with other animals. An indoor breed, drinks a lot of water and loves water so much. That’s why they love to get wet.
Activity: They are an indoor breed and could live in an apartment as long as they have sufficient exercise daily. Because of their heavily coated hair, they could easily feel the heat. That is why they needed to stay in a shaded area and give them cool water. They mostly prefer cool climates. They would always love to play and swim.
Grooming: A Newfie needs to be brushed properly at least a couple to times per week to prevent from heavy shedding. They shed all year round most especially during spring and autumn thus, an extra care is required during heavy shedding. Avoid bathing when its not necessary for them so as not to strip away its coat’s natural oil.
Health Problems: Their Life span is 9 – 10 years. Far shorter than other giant breeds. A number of health problems for newfies are: bloat, SAS, entropion, thyroid problems, ectropion, OCD, HD, heart problems, allergies, skin conditions, and heatstroke in humid or hot conditions.
